Shameless Complacency On Hiatus

July 12, 2007 at 6:43 pm (Announcements)

Yes, you read that right. Until further notice, SC is officially closed for business. The time between posts has been becoming longer and longer since at least April, and I’ve only been getting busier. I’m a little sad to let it go, but at the same time, relieved. I feel like I managed to create and sustain (at least for a little while) a modestly successful blog, and I’m proud of most of it’s content. But lately, I just haven’t had the time or motivation to update it, and I don’t think it would be fair to my readers to keep up this one-post-per-week business. So, for now, SC is on hiatus. Maybe I’ll start blogging again sometime in the future, but if I do, it will probably be on a different blog, with a different name. So, thanks to all my readers, especially the ones who’ve been here since the beginning. And for the record, it was Warner that had me shut down those two times, once over Bjork, and once over Wilco. I’ll leave with the song I happen to be listening to right now, since I couldn’t come up with any good farewell songs. Later,

Kyle

A few notes to Warner:

-None of the post linked to here were written by me, nor were any of the tracks uploaded by me.

-You’ll notice there are no actual mp3s linked to in this post.

-Most importantly, please stop trying to extort every last cent from the few people who are still willing to pay for CD’s from a label as monopolistic as yours. It really pisses us off.

Finally, if your blog has linked to a Zeitgeist track, and isn’t already listed here, drop me a line in the comments, and I’ll update the post.

New Pornos and Simian Tracks + AC, Dizzee and Spoon Vids

July 6, 2007 at 3:13 pm (Animal Collective, Dizzee Rascal, New Pornographers, Simian Mobile Disco, Spoon, Videos, mp3s)

-The catchiest song of the summer, Spoon’s The Underdog now has a video. Camera following assorted producers around a recording session, checking in on emotionless automaton musicians, Underdog could very well be a commentary on the commercialization of music and manufactured pop icons . Or, I could just be reading way too much into a quirky video from a classically quirky band. But that little skip over the dead producers has to mean something.

Vid (No youtube or dm yet, if you find one, leave it in the comments I’ll amend the post)

-Simian Mobile Disco may have been overshadowed by a certain French electronic duo as of late (horrible timing, considering their excellent debut LP was released at the height of the Justice hype-machine), but that hasn’t stopped them from prepping a brand new EP, featuring Tits & Acid, along with two new tracks. It’d be a real shame if this went as criminally unnoticed as the ADSR.

-The second single from Dizzee Rascal has officially been “americanized”. By americanized, of course, I mean butchered. The offensive, but killer chorus is nowhere to be found, instead replaced by a minute of awkward rapping tagged on to the end of the track. The meaningless war and dumb-as-a-bag-of-bricks President have contributed, but I’m sure moves like this are why the rest of the world hates the U.S. At least the video is pretty good.

-I’m a little surprised I haven’t already said so, but I really love the New Pornographers latest album, Challengers. It’s a more mature sound for them, low-key and quiet, but it suits them well. Still, it’s got its poppy moments, such as Bejar’s Myriad Harbour, but I’m certainly not going to complain. After all, Harbour might just be the greatest thing Bejar’s ever contributed to the group.

-Animal Collective released the video for Fireworks, a few days ago, on the evening of July 3rd. Fireworks is the centerpiece of their latest album, Strawberry Jam, and the video captures everything that’s great about it, from the subtle surreality of it all, to the slightly dark undercurrent running through the vocals. A beautiful video for a beautiful song from a beautiful album.
