You might remember Amiina, the Icelandic string quartet, from their previous work with Sigur Ros on ( ) and Takk. Although Sigur Ros definitely overshadowed Amiina on those albums, their sweet, soft melodies were audible somewhere in the layers of Sigur Ros’s work. Now, you can hear those melodies on their own, on Amiina’s first LP, Kurr. When I first heard about this album, I was worried that without Sigur Ros, Amiina would sound too bland and simplistic. Thankfully, that’s definitely not the case. Kurr’s lush sounds stand firmly on their own too feet. It’s almost too easy to get swept up by their beauty. When you first listen to Kurr, you’ll probably find the end coming well before you thought; it’s that kind of album. Kurr was released on Amiina’s own label, Bláskjár Records, and you can buy it at Amiina’s website.
